Can an Adulterer Go to Heaven?

Steve Brown tells about a time when he and some of the other Professors at Reformed Theological Seminary were in a faculty meeting and the question came up:

“Is it possible for someone to die in the arms of a prostitute and still go to heaven?”

Brown said that one-by-one speculations were given from around the table. Most said they had their doubts, some said “no way”. Then it came RC Sproul’s turn to answer the question. He said:

“Gentlemen, of course someone can die in the arms of a prostitute and go to heaven! Christianity is founded on Salvation by Faith through Grace ALONE! If you have to add anything to it, including obedience or lack of failures, then it is no longer by Faith through Grace ALONE! If you have to do anything to get it or keep it, then it is no longer a free gift. Countless people have been persecuted and given their lives for this precious truth, and you guys have just spent the last half hour destroying it!”

RC is right. You can die in the arms of a prostitute and go to heaven.  It is possible to fall big time and still be saved – you can fall massively, but not finally, if you have genuine saving faith.

Think about that next time you are tempted to judge someone else’s sin for them. Think about it too, the next time you fall and feel like God’s grace is too small to forgive and restore you.

Question: Does what was said in this meeting at RTS shock you? Do you think there are any limits on God’s grace?
